What is the "Mover of the Month"?
- #PowerMovesOnly will spend 2018 intentionally promoting the success-oriented lifestyles of women of color, alongside our usual promotion of #powermoves. We plan to do this through our newest initiative "Mover of the Month". Every Month of 2018, we will highlight a woman of color who is making #powermoves in her respective field.

LaKesha Lorene
Interview with Lakesha:
Where are you from?
-
I was born and raised in Indianapolis.
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
My power moves are using my talents with purpose on purpose. As an actress, director and CEO of entertainment production company Loving Life Productions LLC, I have the chance to not only grow as an artist but help other artist develop and use their acting gifts in the projects I write, direct and produce.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I'm inspired to make #powermoves because I truly believe we were all put on this earth to make a difference. Acting is more than lines, makeup, and wardrobe changes. For me, acting is a spiritual experience that allows me for a moment, get into the mind of the character I am portraying on-screen (or stage) that is someone's reality in real life. I know I've done my job when I can sincerely tell this person's story and through that piece of art inspire their lives for the better in some way.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
I think it’s important for people to know that they don’t have to subscribe to one label. If they happen to be multifaceted and their many gifts all serve a similar purpose, they can focus on the primary development of that one gift and it will make room for the others to flow through. I have a motto I use often as a signature on social media posts called “chasing destiny.” Although I’ve been acting professionally since the age of eight, and I’ve produced and directed several works over the last few years, there is always something to learn. So I’m constantly in pursuit of bettering myself and growing as an actress and artist. I think that is the only way to live life in purpose. That’s my goal. Each of our paths to purpose look totally different. So I always encourage people to take the time, get to know themselves enough to understand their gifting, see where God is directing them, and chase the purpose and destiny that God has for them. I can attest that once you understand your purpose, your faith and work will open doors that you could never imagine. Now that's a #powermove. :)

I was born and raised in Lorain, Ohio.
Describe your #powermove(s).

After working in Retail for many years I stepped out on Faith and opened a Wellness Center. At Life Changing Wellness Center we offer Colon Hydrotherapy and Health Coaching. Colon Hydrotherapy is a method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. By introducing warm, filtered water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. This process is repeated a few times during a session. Some people may wonder why should we care about the colon? Well ~ The colon has been referred to as the sewer system of the body. It is the place where we store the waste material that most of us would rather not think about. A healthy colon produces vitamins B and K, as well as absorbs water. A healthy digestive tract helps support a healthy immune system.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
My inspiration came from God. I felt a call on my life to help individual's with their health. So, by integrating Nutrition and Colon Hydrotherapy into their lives I have been able to help many people overcome many health obstacles. Food Changes Everything ~ It's our medicine. Implementing the proper foods in your diet can heal the most serious of health issues.

Latrece Murdock
Interview with Latrece:
Where are you from?
-
I was born, and raised, in Gary, Indiana.
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
I believe my first, and most impactful, #powermove was becoming a stay-at- home mom to care for my husband and three children. To faithfully submit to that calling from God was not easy. There were times when I felt I would never get the opportunity to pursue my passion for all things related to home & family, hospitality, and pastry. I am grateful to have faithfully served my family for 22years, and I will continue to do so. Through Christ, the fruit of my sacrifice is that my husband and I have raised (and are still raising) three blessed and brilliant children who love God and are intentional about their personal relationship with Him. Through that sacrifice, my husband has been able to tirelessly work in full-time ministry to advance the cause of Christ.
-
My second #powermove has been pursuing my passion for hospitality, specifically home & family, and food & pastry. This has manifested itself through my small pastry and catering business. This pursuit has also provided opportunities for me to offer families healthy and affordable meal options through consulting sessions, cooking demonstrations, and small group cooking classes.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
My relationship with Christ inspires me to make #powermoves. I know He has given me a heart for family, and serving others. He has also blessed me with creativity and passion in the area of hospitality, specifically food & pastry, and home & family. I am compelled to serve Him in these areas in order to be a blessing to others. Though I’ve never seen my service as #powermoves, I will gladly accept the platform to bring glory to Him.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
I purpose to live my life in a way that reflects Christ in all that I do, and bring glory and honor to His name. I want Him to be pleased with my service. I understand that sacrifice and selflessness are a part of my journey through this life. It is my desire to handle them with grace, dignity, and courage. I am learning that God’s timing is best. When I became a stay-at- home mom and wife, I felt the pursuit of my passion was a dream deferred. I wondered, to quote Bro. Langston Hughes, would it “dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-and then run? [Would] it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over– like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it [would] just sag like a heave load. Or [would] it explode? I learned, in my case, that none of those options were the result. In fact, my dream became more defined and refined. God took it from what I thought it should be to what He intended it to be. The Lord is good, and He is faithful. I am looking forward to what He has planned for me in this season of my journey. You can also find me on Instagram!

Chandra Lynch
Interview with Chandra:
Where are you from?
-
Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
I own a production company that specializes in photography art, creative theater & film.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I've always loved photography, I had a camera in my hand all the time at an early age. Eventually, I started my own photography business which thrived for 9 years, then last year met my business partner, whom has an extensive theater background and expanded the company into production. Meshing my love of photography, theater and business savvy has been the easiest & smoothest decision I have ever made. I strive for my company to be successful in order to inspire others and to be a financial investor in the arts for others.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
Ankh Productions launched our very first theatrical production, "Love You Reckless" early March 2018. We will continue to provide the Indy arts scene with provocative and creative works. This summer we will be launching a photography exhibition centered around women's issues. Our first short film will be premiering later this year. We will also be partnering with Jackson-Brown Entertainment in the fall for a new original stage play written by Angela Jackson-Brown, writer of the acclaimed nationally touring stage play "It Is Well". We will be offering acting workshops and ensemble training, headed by our vice president, Jamaal McCray, who has a degree in theater studies & other accolades from Indiana University. We continuously pour into our community by providing the homeless with cold water and fresh fruit in the summer and hats, gloves & scarves in the winter; offer free photographic services to non-profit organizations and underprivileged individuals in the community. Service, love, passion and giving are the reason we go as hard as we do.
Uzuri Asad
Interview with Uzuri:
Where are you from?
-
I am from Cleveland, Ohio; born and raised.
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
I am an artist and reflection of all that is. I use dance, adornments, style, vision, and voice to curate safe spaces for women of color to self-express.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
My family and my soul, which, I can't say are two different entities. I'm inspired deeply by the love of my husband, and I know that there is work to be done to ensure the experience of the world our children will inherit is a better one than the one we are navigating through now. Also, there are ideas moving through me often, and I don't believe I should ignore the things I wake up and go to sleep thinking about.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
I genuinely believe that we all have a natural collection of abilities meant to heal, aid, and support us as individuals and as a global community. The choices that we make are the difference makers in whether or not those abilities serve that purpose. Die empty. Leave no possibilities that call to your soul to chance. It's okay to be afraid to do something, as long as you listen to your heart and not that fear. Do it anyway. That's how you change the world. ️
Allison Victoria
Interview with Allison:
Where are you from?
-
I am from Indianapolis,IN.
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
Using my art to make a positive difference in the world. I hope to use art to unite people. There tends to be a disconnect with two major groups of people, the homeless and the youth. There is not enough people that want to help them. I plan to do my best.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I feel like there is often a small disconnect with one another at times. I hope my art can genuinely unite people.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
I want to bring more awareness to the world. From every aspect, but particularly dealing with the homeless and youth. Homeless have often been forgotten & alienated. The youth, especially between ages 18-20, are deemed a lost cause. So, I’ve made it my mission to pour into people in a positive way not only through music but in everyday life. I hope to inspire someone else to do the same. It starts with something simple we can all do, smile. Simply acknowledging someone’s presence can go so far.

Loretta Davidson
Interview with Loretta:
Where are you from?
-
South Bend, Indiana
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
This particularly #powermove that you’re witnessing is my biggest platform I ever had to operate within my gift of motivational speaking, where I utilized it to inspire 43 countries and a Fortune 500 company to identify their gift in order to operate within their purpose. The opportunity to deliver a TedTalk at the age of 24 is all the confirmation I need to know what I am suppose to be doing and this is just the beginning.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
My inspiration is directed by the One above. He declares that I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper and not harm you, to give you hope and future. Biggest challenge generation after generations have is 1) knowing you serve a significant purpose on this earth and then 2) operating within it to strengthen others and reap the blessings from your gift to give you overflowing fulfillment and value. We’re broken down by so many worldly gains and the moment we realize we’re destined for greatness is when you walk away from complacency and step into a glorious future.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
I’ve taken my gift to develop a foundation ROSE: Revitalize the Spirit of Essence. It means to give birth to who you are at your very core. ROSE is built on Vitality, Charm, and Essence. Values that drive towards the power to endure, what makes you stand out & draw others in, and realize your purest qualities. I will use this platform to travel and speak around the globe to highlight others who have taken their specialty into business and provide tools to direct others into theirs. Grande opening of ROSE is in the near future followed by conferences and other gatherings. I will be seeking other talent to execute these events. Thank you #Powermovesonly for recognition and this great opportunity.

Diamond Coleman
Interview with Diamond:
Where are you from?
-
Originally from Camden, New Jersey residing currently in Terre Haute, Indiana for collegiate studies.
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
My #powermove(s) has been to begin building a self-funding non-profit aimed at raising awareness for mental
health in our communities. As a Mental Health advocate, I have spent the last year creating the Mental
MonsterZ program, including but not limited to: creating targeted educational programing, improving policy
pertaining to mental health and creating a safe atmosphere for people to express themselves while learning to
live their best lives by constructively managing their Mental Health.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I began making #powermoves for my cause when I realized that just “saying something” wasn’t enough. I
hoped that by being honest and open, more of the people who knew me would understand what it means to
manage their Mental Health. Instead I found myself met with the cold shoulder by those who didn’t understand
and being treated like a child by those who claimed they did understand. Instead of lashing out I am taking this
opportunity to educate! Mental MonsterZ is designed to create a window into the lives of others to show the
public what it means to care for one’s Mental Health. In the year I have gained a follower from every continent
except Antarctica, raised over $500.00 for programming, been interviewed for a Newspaper, featured on a
podcast, won an interview scholarship and landed myself a position on my university’s campus improving
mental health policy.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
Physical Health is just as important as Mental Health, and if you aren’t taking care of your brain, you aren’t
taking care of yourself! I have events planned for the rest of the year as well as a Black Mental Health
campaign planned for all of February! I am hoping to see my organization spread nationwide as well as
claiming an official building within the next ten years!
August:
Bria Carter
Interview with Bria:
Where are you from?
-
I was born in Chicago, but raised in Indianapolis - sprinkle a few years in Atlanta, GA and Memphis, TN. I currently reside in Oak Park, IL!
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
A few years ago I created a platform highlighting creative movers and shakers in the Midwest region. Soul Culture started as a personal blog to share my favorite musicians, artists, and fashion designers and eventually transformed into an opportunity for me to share appreciation for the talented individuals in my hometown.
-
I consider Soul Culture a "power move" because it offers exposure to creatives in an area that is often underestimated. Even more, it's offered me experiences that I never even imagined possible!
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I'm inspired to continue running Soul Culture because of the people that I write about. Through my writing I'm able to work with creatives of so many different formats - not just musicians, but also painters, photographers, models, poets, the list goes on. It's also surreal that so many people take my art seriously! My site is making noise in places that I least expected, offering me opportunities to attend events and interview people that I've always looked up to (for example: ALLEN IVERSON, WOW). I sometimes get creative block and struggle to share content, but these times seem to be when I receive the most submissions for interviews or posts. I consider the weird timing as Mother Universe's kick in my ass.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
If you takeaway anything from my story, let it be to follow your own interests and passions! Honestly, anything is possible if you put aside outside judgements and work hard at what you enjoy doing organically. It sounds cliche, but it's the truth. Soul Culture is a prime example of the possibilities.
-
Also, support your local artists! There are so many worthy talents that are attempting to thrive right in our backyards - show them some love! Don't know where to start? Visit Soul Culture :)
September:
Natalie Murdock
Interview with Natalie:
Where are you from?
-
Fishers, IN
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
Currently a student at Purdue University, majoring in Public Health with a concentration in Social and Behavioral Sciences while concurrently pursuing a Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. I was most recently named the 2018 500 Festival Queen Scholar in May of 2018. I am the third black woman in the history of the 500 Festival to receive this title. I am a writer, so in addition to my heavy involvement on campus and in the West Lafayette community, I have the wonderful opportunity to use my social media to encourage other people through my writing everyday.
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I am propelled by my God-given purpose, and my desire to inspire and encourage others, as those surrounding me have done for me. The lessons I have learned, difficulties and trials The Lord moves me through, are not just meant for me. I believe in service, we must share our development, so we can help others in their path of development as well. For this reason, I have enjoyed being able to not only write, but speak to different groups of people to encourage others to progress on the path God has designed for them. (So I am absolutely open to doing more speaking engagements)
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
I am currently working on a book, because I knew that I couldn’t keep my struggle, lesson, and development to myself. Isolation has hurt me more than it has helped me many times. Others have come alongside me, and in sharing their personal story, have encouraged me and helped me move forward as God saw fit. I would encourage you all to not keep to yourself. If you’re not social, that’s okay. But know that this life was not meant for you to live alone. Stand by your people, and allow your people to stand by you. Remain loyal to them not only in the good times, but also in the bad. We all need that. My relationship with Christ has taught me these lessons. So I would encourage you to explore the concept of getting into relationship with Christ. It is the greatest decision I have ever made, and is the reason why I do what I do. It can’t hurt to try.
October:
Cristina McNeiley
Interview with Cristina:
Where are you from?
-
I was born in the beautiful city of Chicago (where I currently reside), but I am from Hammond, Indiana. (Heyyyyy 219, heyyyyy).
Describe your #powermove(s).
-
Currently I am a 2L student at Chicago-Kent College of Law. This in itself is one of the biggest #powermoves I have ever made in my life. I am a first generation college student as well as the first in my entire family to pursue any post-graduate degree. My parents had me as teenagers and my father was tried as an adult and sentenced to prison when I was two weeks old. Because of my background I was constantly told that I would amount to nothing. But looking back on all that negativity, I realize it only pushed me to work harder to prove everyone wrong.
My biggest #powermove thus far is that I was named the 2017 Barnes & Thornburg LLP Chicago Diversity Scholar. This meant that I was not only one of the only 1L’s in my class to work as a summer associate for a large law firm, but I was one of the very small number of 1L’s nationwide with this position. Even when I was told by others that I wouldn’t get the job, I bet on myself…and everything fell into place.
After an amazing summer at Barnes & Thornburg LLP, I was able to receive an offer to return for the 2019 summer. Additionally, I am humbled to say that I am currently a judicial extern for the Honorable Chief Judge Castillo of the Northern District of Illinois. Chief Judge Castillo was the very first Latino Federal Judge in the state of Illinois and he was the first Latino to be named Chief Judge of the Northern District of Illinois. Being able to say I work with Chief Judge Castillo makes my heart so full and it makes my family beyond proud..
What inspires you to make these #powermove(s)?
-
I began making these #powermoves because of my family, but as time went on I realized the #powermoves I would be making would be for a purpose beyond that. My story began with my great grandparents on both sides of my family. They came to Chicago in the 1950s, and I am blessed to say that my great grandparents on my father’s side still live in the same house they moved into on the Southeast side. I constantly tell my great grandfather that if it wasn’t for him and my great grandmother, none of this would be possible. It would be a disservice to them if I did not achieve greatness simply because they risked everything with the belief that our family was going to be great. My parents have also been a major inspiration as to why I make these #powermoves. My whole life they uplifted me and reminded me that I could do anything and everything I put my mind to. My father used to tell me, “You’re going to change everything for us and this family shorty,” and that always stuck with me. They sacrificed so much to make sure that had the tools necessary to become successful. If it wasn’t for my parents I would not have made it through high school, college, and now law school. I owe them the world and more. With them comes my grandmother Lupe, my mom’s mother. Words cannot begin to describe what she means to me and what she has done for me throughout my entire life. I live to see her smile and I know she does with every #powermove I make.
-
Most importantly, the younger generation of Women of Color that comes after me is my true inspiration. Women of Color, especially Latinas, are vastly underrepresented in the legal profession. Only 8% of private practice attorneys are Women of Color, and of the 23% of women that make up law firm partners – less than 3% are Women of Color. As a proud Latina, this statistic is even more frightening because according to the Hispanic National Bar Association, Latinas compromise only 1.9% of law associates and 0.4% of partners in law firms. You see, representation is so important because we live in a world where women like myself and those that I call my sisters, are told that we will not make it. But with the #powermoves I make, I hope to show the generation of Women of Color that
comes after me that we belong here. Even when the odds are stacked against us and when the world tries its best to keep us down - we will remain strong and
we are not going anywhere.
What is something you want folks to know about you or your #powermove(s)?
-
When given the opportunity I love talking to middle and high school students about my story, especially students who come from a similar background as me. When I talk to them I always tell them to bet on themselves, to keep pushing, to keep striving, and to do whatever it takes to accomplish any goals they have. I tell them that I believe in them and that if I can make it to where I am now, they can make it too. There is no greater feeling than seeing their eyes light up when you tell them that. As if all they needed to hear was a simple, “I believe in you.” If you take anything from me and my story (no matter what point you are at in your life) I hope that it is this: Where you begin is not necessarily where you end up; never let another person try to limit your capabilities, never let an individual try to downgrade your intelligence, never let someone cutdown your hustle, never forget where you came from because it made you who you are, never forget about the people who uplifted you when you needed it the most, and never give up on yourself. You were created and put on this Earth for a reason -
so be all that you are destined to be. I believe in you.
